Saudi Deans Committee (SDC)

Saudi Medical Deans Committee was established in February 2008 to support the medical education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It started by small meeting which was held at Taibah University and its purpose was to establish a constitution for the Saudi Medical Deans Committee.
Members of the committee are a total of 26 Medical Schools in Saudi Arabia (22 are governmental and 4 private Medical Schools). The current members of the committee are as the following:

Major Tasks of the Saudi Medical Deans Committee:
The Saudi Deans Committee have setup clear operational plan that will include taking care of major tasks that will contribute:

  1. To develop medical schools in Saudi Arabia.
  2. To provide help & support in the different issues related to basic requirements of the newly established medical schools in Saudi Arabia.
  3. The committee will work as liaison body with different health authorities in KSA such as Saudi Council for Health Specialties to coordinate the common issues that will help to improve health service quality in the KSA.
  4. The committee will work as consultant to the Ministry of Higher Education for all issues related to raising standard of Medical Education in KSA.

Saudi Society for Medical Education (SSME)

The Saudi Society for Medical Education (SSME) was established in 2003 (1423) by members of high caliber and a multidisciplinary health professionals supported by the regulatory rules of the national scientific organization.

SSME has since then grown to over 200 members of several specialties (MD) including educators, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers, assessors and students in medicine and other healthcare professionals.

SSME prides itself on its multidisciplinary and multispecialty membership and its members benefit from the assortment of perspectives

 

Council of the Deans of Medical Schools in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) .

Council of the Deans of Medical Schools in GCC

The Council was established in 1997 under the umbrella of the Council of the Ministers of Higher Education in GCC and it reports to the GCC Secretariat in Riyadh. Since its inceptions the secretariat of the GCC Medical Deans Council itself has been based at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The AGU is the official GCC institution of higher learning for the Region.

The Council has been meeting regularly (once or twice a year) in one the member medical schools. There are currently 24 medical schools in the Council and the most recent meeting was held at Um Al-Qura University, Makkah in September 2011. The next meeting of the Council is planned to take place at Imam Mohammed Bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh in April 2012. The Council’s work is guided by a strategy of five-year plans and comprises of regular activities such as hosting and organizing a GCC Medical Education Conference every two years and organizing an annual scientific medical student conference. The plans also include new projects in the area of medical education such as developing and maintaining a GCC questions data bank, collaboration with Regional and International bodies in medical education, ensuring Quality Assurance and Accreditation of medical schools.
